Insurance is complex and confusing. I am sure you likely know that already. I am currently in network for most Premera, Regence, Blue Cross/Shield, Assuris, United, and Kaiser plans. I am NOT billing for Molina. Molina has me listed as a provider, but I am not able to take that insurance (speaking of complex and confusing). While I am on most of the above providers' plans, I may not be on your specific plan. I highly, highly, highly (said it three times so must be true) recommend you call and double check with your insurance company. I suggest trying to find out when your insurance customer service line opens in the AM and call then. If at all possible, do not call around lunch time. These tips may help delay wait times.
Questions to ask:
1. Is James Anacker in my network?
2. What are my out of pocket expenses?
3. Do I need a referral?
*4. If looking to bill for couples counseling does my plan cover “billing code 90847?”
You need to make sure that your particular plan covers "billing code 90847." I think that it is a flaw in insurance that many plans do not cover this code. I could go into a long tangent, that couples therapy is shown via research to help both partner’s mental health. I could also explain how two clients are getting medical benefit for the price of one session. But that is besides the point. Wait, I did go on that tangent. So, this is an unfortunate reality. Other couples therapists may have unique work arounds for couples therapy insurance billing, but for me- I am most comfortable billing code 90847. I just want to inform you that there may be other options out there.
I am able to provide you with a superbill upon request. A superbill is an itemized document produced usually after several sessions that include information such as billing codes and diagnosis used. This can be useful for applying for out of network reimbursement if I am not on your plan. You need to make sure you have double checked that your insurance company and plan provides this benefit. Many plans do not. I would not assume that your insurance will reimburse for a superbill. If this is your intention, please communicate that to me and I can inform you of risks. The most common risk is that you may not receive any compensation from your insurance company. Therefore it is essential that you do your homework, which usually involves talking to your insurance company.
Out of pocket costs can be very expensive. I charge $200 per 60 minute session for my full rate for individuals. I am willing to do $150 per 45 minute session.
For couples, I charge $225 per 60 minute session for my full rate. I am willing to do $168.00 for 45 minute couples session.
Please keep in mind that I have invested in four years of undergraduate education, three years of Master’s education, and two years of PhD study (I did not finish the PhD program). Every year, I spend an extensive amount of money and unpaid time on continuing education. My expenses are ongoing, and my investments are considerable in both time and money. I know therapy is expensive, but there may be more affordable options. If you need help trying to find something more affordable, reach out and I would be happy to try and help you look at options. I can not guarantee that I can find other options for you, but I am happy to help you the best I can.
